All information about the collection

This article describes the Star Wars kit series “Build your X-Wing” by DeAgostini. The extremely detailed X-Wing model is based on miniatures from Industrial Light & Magic. These were constructed for the shooting of the special effects of Star Wars “A New Hope”. In each magazine there are high-quality components made of metal and plastic. These can be assembled effortlessly with screwdrivers and other fastening options.

The components have been prefabricated in such a way that they can be screwed or pressed together. The parts already bear the original colours and reference pictures and detailed instructions show how you can add individual traces of use to the model to give it even more authenticity.

The magazine and the components

Issue 1:

The 1st edition of the “Build your X-Wing” collection by DeAgostini contains the components for cockpit cockpit, cannon and astromechdroid R2-D2. The accompanying magazine, shows a tutorial for building phase 1 and focuses on Ralph McQuarrie and Luke Skywalker. In my opinion, these are very good themes to start this collection, I find the drawings and sketches of Ralph McQuarrie especially interesting.

Bau Deinen X-Wing #1Creation of a fleet of spaceships – Ralph McQuarrie

Components and construction phase

This edition contains both halves of the hinged cockpit hood for Red Five as well as components of the upper laser gun starboard (right). We also get various components for R2-D2. Both the laser cannon and the Astromech will be completed in the first four construction phases. I find the modelling and painting of the first parts very successful. Even if this construction phase is still very short, I am already looking forward to the further components and construction phases.

Issue 2:

In the 2nd edition of the “Build your X-Wing” collection by DeAgostini are the components for cockpit floor, laser cannon and astromechdroid R2-D2. The accompanying magazine, shows a guide to construction phase 2 and focuses on Colin Cantwell and Biggs Darklighter. In my opinion, the choice of topics in the second issue was also very successful, I especially liked the chapter about Biggs Darklighter.

Components and construction phase

This issue contains all components for the laser generator of the first laser cannon as well as the components for the left leg of R2-D2. Also included is the cockpit floor, which we will soon be working on installing in the fuselage. Also in the second construction phase the modelling and the painting of the components were very successful. It remains to be seen whether the construction phases will always be so short or whether they will be more extensive.

Issue 3:

The 3rd edition of the “Build your X-Wing” collection from DeAgostini includes the parts for R2-D2, laser cannon and cockpit frame. The accompanying magazine, shows a tutorial for construction phase 3 and focuses on Industrial Light & Magic and Poe Dameron. In this issue too, the two topics are extremely interesting. Both the background information on the creation of the models and on Poe’s life.

Bau Deinen X-Wing #3Creation of a fleet of spaceships – The origin of the models
For the action sequences, the Industrial Light & Magic
team has to change the design of the X-Wing several times.

This edition contains among other things the components for
assembly of the right leg of R2-D2 and for the installation of internal LED.

Components and construction phase

This issue contains the components for the right leg of R2-D2, including the internal LED, as well as the remaining components for the housing of the first laser generator and the frame for the cockpit, which comes later on the fuselage. The modelling and painting of the components has become very good. In addition, the scope of the construction phase has already increased somewhat, which I find very gratifying.

Issue 4:

The 4th edition of the “Build your X-Wing” collection by DeAgostini includes the components for cockpit floor, astromechdroid and laser cannon. The accompanying magazine, shows an instruction manual for construction phase 4 and focuses on action sequences with the X-Wing. In my opinion, it is very pleasing that this construction phase is somewhat larger. Even if there is only one big chapter to discuss, it is all the more interesting. The gap-filling chapter “In Focus” did not convince me.

Components and construction phase

This issue contains the missing components of the three assemblies we are currently working on: Cockpit floor, R2-D2 and upper starboard laser gun. We also get a battery box that we can use with two AAA batteries to test the light effects on R2-D2 and laser gun. The components of this edition have become very good. Finally there is a longer construction phase and the light effects can be tested already now. Especially the effect of the laser cannon looks simply ingenious.

Issue 5:

In the 5th edition of the “Build your X-Wing” collection from DeAgostini are the parts for cockpit instruments and astromechdroids R2-D2 included. The accompanying magazine, shows a guide to construction phase 5 and deals with the construction of the film set and Wedge Antilles. I think the chapter “Building the film set” is the best, but also the double-sided drawing by Ralph McQuarrie from the intermediate chapter “In Focus” is simply fantastic.

This issue contains the components for the cockpit and
the instrument panel and an extra leg for R2-D2.

Components and construction phase

This issue contains the first sections of the instrument panels including the transparent lenses for your lighting. We also get the components for R2-D2’s third leg, which will be used when he leaves his Droid base. It covers the spindle that turns his head. I find the modelling and painting of the parts very nice. Unfortunately, this construction phase was again very short, I am curious about the further components and construction phases.

Issue 6:

In the 6th edition of the “Build your X-Wing” collection from DeAgostini are the parts for cockpit housings and screws included. The accompanying magazine, shows a tutorial for building phase 6 and deals with the construction of the film set and Anakin Skywalker. In my opinion I find the chapter “Building the film set” very interesting, and the double-page drawing from the intermediate chapter “In Focus” looks simply fantastic.

Build your X-Wing – Construction phase 6
This edition includes the cockpit housing,
into which we are installing the instrument panels.

Components and construction phase

This edition includes the outer cockpit paneling. In it we install the instrument consoles completed in the last phase. I think the modelling and painting of the only large part of this edition is very successful. Unfortunately this construction phase was extremely short. Hopefully this will change with the next construction phases.

Issue 7:

The 7th edition of the “Build your X-Wing” collection by DeAgostini includes the components for the upper side of the starboard wing. The accompanying magazine, shows a guide to construction phase 7 and focuses on the Red Squadron in action and Wedge Antilles. The topics in this issue are again very informative, I found the chapter about Wedge Antilles particularly interesting.

Flying aces – Wedge Antilles

Components and construction phase

This edition includes some small parts as well as the plate that serves as the top of the upper wing on the right side of the X-Wing. It already carries markings, including five stripes that identify the starfighter as Red Five. The first really big part looks damn good. But unfortunately, this construction phase was again very short. The new design without glue and the missing injection moulds make this even more so.

Issue 8:

The 8th edition of the “Build your X-Wing” collection from DeAgostini includes the components for the sash frame, inner and outer sash details. The accompanying magazine, shows an instruction manual for building phase 8 and focuses on the flight through the equatorial trench and Hera Syndulla. Issue 8 is so full of exciting topics that I find it hard to decide whether I liked the flight through the trench, Hera Syndulla or the double-sided picture of the Ghost in action the best.

Ausgabe #8Creation of a fleet of spaceships – Cinema magic

Components and construction phase

The main component of this edition is the metal frame, which forms the outer part of the bracing for the wing begun in construction phase 7. We also receive screws for fixing the frame and other details for the inside. Unfortunately the 8th construction phase is again very short, but it is progressing in small steps.

Issue 9:

In the 9th edition of the “Build your X-Wing” collection by DeAgostini the mounting for the sublight drive is included including details. The accompanying magazine, shows an instruction for construction phase 9 and deals with the reconstruction of the X-Wing and Anakin Skywalker. In my opinion the best topic in issue 9 is the reconstruction of the X-Wing. I was very enthusiastic about the textual content and the great pictures.

Ausgabe #9Creation of a fleet of spaceships – Preparations
The enormous success of “Star Wars” leads to the fact that within

Build your X-Wing – Construction phase 9
This issue contains the mounting for the actuator
on the first S-wing of the starfighter and various details.

Components and construction phase

With this issue we get that rectangular part of the wing root to which the first of the four sublight drives of the X-Wing is attached. Inside the bracket is the control mechanism for opening and closing the wings. The largest part of this edition is very successful in terms of modelling and painting. Also the building phase was a bit better but still much too short.

Bauteile #9Bauteile #9Bauteile #9

Issue 10:

In the 10 . Edition of the “Build your X-Wing” collection by DeAgostini includes the upper half of the upper starboard drive and details. The accompanying magazine, shows an instruction manual for construction phase 10 and deals with the set design of Episode V and General Merrick. I like the magazines more and more! Also in issue 10 I can only choose both topics, which offer great drawings, pictures and very informative text.

Ausgabe #10Creation of a fleet of spaceships – Back in the studio
Only a few months after the cinema premiere of the first
Star Wars film, the preparations for shooting a sequel begin.
Flying aces – Antoc Merrick

Build your X-Wing – Construction phase 10
This edition contains the upper part of the housing for
the upper starboard drive and various details.

Components and construction phase

With this issue we receive the upper half of the cylindrical housing for the upper starboard drive. It will be placed later in the bracket we assembled in construction phase 9. In addition, this edition includes various details, including the conically shaped electromagnetic gyroscope. I think the modelling and painting of the propulsion housing is very successful. In the meantime, one has gotten used to the short construction phases.

Issue 11:

The 11th edition of the “Build your X-Wing” collection from DeAgostini includes the components for the starboard drive as well as attachment details. The accompanying magazine, shows an instruction manual for construction phase 11 and deals with the ice hangar and Jango Fett. In this issue I like the chapter with the creation of the ice hangar best, because of the many beautiful pictures of the set.

Ausgabe #11Creation of a fleet of spaceships – The Ice Hangar

drive and various details for the engine housing.

Components and construction phase

With this issue we receive the upper half of the fusion engine for starboard propulsion and one half of the fission chamber. We also get various details for the outside of the propulsion housing. I think the modeling of the components has turned out very well. Even the smallest parts are completely prefabricated and just have to be plugged in. It will take some time to get used to it.

Issue 12:

In the 12th edition of the “Build your X-Wing” collection by DeAgostini there are more components for the starboard drive. The accompanying magazine, shows an instruction manual for construction phase 12 and deals with the set of Dagobah and Doctor Aphra. In this issue I liked the chapter with Doctor Aphra best. I was very surprised that comic figures are also described in the magazines.

This issue contains the second half of the
fusion chamber and the turbo generator.

Components and construction phase

With this issue we receive the second half of the fusion chamber for starboard propulsion as well as various details, including the turbo generator and its impeller. I think the modeling of the components is very successful. Even though this construction phase requires some tact and sensitivity when attaching the impeller blades.

Issue 13:

In the 13th edition of the “Build your X-Wing” collection by DeAgostini there are more components for the starboard drive including LED for the thruster. The accompanying magazine, shows a guide to construction phase 13 and focuses on Dagobah and Arvel Crynyd. In my opinion, the chapter “Creating a Starship Fleet” is one of the best in this issue. Especially the fantastic pictures never cease to amaze me.

of the actuator and the LED for illuminating the thruster.

Components and construction phase

With this issue we get all the components we need to complete the rear end of the first of the four sublight drives of the X-Wing. Also included are an LED and optical parts to illuminate the drive nozzle. The parts of this issue were painted very well and there are also very small parts included. Accordingly, the construction phase is also a bit more filigree than others.

Issue 14:

The 14th edition of the “Build your X-Wing” collection from DeAgostini includes the components for the upper starboard wing. The accompanying magazine, shows an instruction manual for construction phase 14 and deals with special effects and Plo Koon. Also in this issue I could enjoy the many pictures of the creation of individual scenes. The creation of the special effects is very well described.

Components and construction phase

With this edition we receive the inner frame and a bracing for the upper starboard wing. Furthermore a cover for the lower wing, various screws and plugs as well as a cable for the laser gun are included. Finally there is something to screw in this construction phase again. Even though the laying of the cable harnesses was a bit tricky, I found it very interesting.

sash and the piping for the outside.

Components and construction phase

With this issue we receive various details with which we equip the outside of the energy distributor located in front of the thruster. I find the modeling of the enclosed components very successful. In this phase of construction a sure instinct is required, due to the very small components.

Issue 16:

The 16th edition of the “Build your X-Wing” collection from DeAgostini includes the components for the starboard drive. The accompanying magazine, shows an instruction manual for construction phase 16 and deals with shooting in Sandstorm and Odd Ball. In my opinion, the chapter about the cut scenes in Sandstorm is the best in this issue, with a lot of impressive pictures from the set.

Components and construction phase

With this issue, we receive various details for assemblies that we completed in earlier phases, as well as for the power distributor. After their assembly, we will install the drive on the upper starboard wing of the X-Wing. Finally, another extensive construction phase. Even though some components are very delicate, it is nice to build the X-Wing together for a little longer than usual.

The accompanying magazine, shows a guide to construction phase 17 and focuses on the new X-Wing model for “The Return of the Jedi Knights” and Nien Nunb. In my opinion, the chapter about the new X-Wing model for “The Return of the Jedi Knights” is the best part of this issue, with many impressive pictures from the set.

Issue 18:

In the 18th edition of the “Build your X-Wing” collection by DeAgostini the cockpit glazing is included. The accompanying magazine, shows a guide to construction phase 18 and focuses on the Special Editions and Anakin Skywalker. Apparently the great topics about the shooting are finished. In the current issue no chapter has appealed to me.

The 20th edition of the “Build your X-Wing” collection by DeAgostini includes the components for the lower laser cannon on the port side. I find the concept of the magazine very confusing and can’t understand what the Star Wars toys have to do with the creation of a spaceship fleet.

Components and construction phase

With this issue we receive all the components with which we can complete the assembly of the laser cannon that has begun phase 19. In the 25th edition of the “Build your X-Wing” collection from DeAgostini the components for the lower port drive are included including details. Components and construction phase

With this issue we get the partition wall, which is behind the pilot. The wall divides the cockpit from that part of the fuselage which houses the hyperdrive, the S-wing mountings and various flight systems. This construction phase is simply a joke. This is probably the shortest construction phase with the ugliest components.

Build your X-Wing – Construction phase 79
Set with the components of this issue
we’re proceeding with hyperdrive assembly.

Components and construction phase

We mount the components delivered this time on the bracket of the hyperdrive, which is located in the rear fuselage of our X-Wings model. Furthermore we continued the assembly of the cooling system in this phase. I think the modelling and painting of the components is very successful. Even if this construction phase is very short, I am looking forward to the further components and construction phases.

The 80th edition of the “Build your X-Wing” collection from DeAgostini includes the components for the power nozzles and the frame. The accompanying magazine, shows an instruction manual for building phase 80 and focuses on the B-Wing and Ketso Onyo. In my opinion, these are very good topics in this issue, the drawings and sketches from the design development of the B-Wing I find particularly interesting.

for the hyperdrive of our X-Wing model.

Components and construction phase

The cast frames delivered this time contain plastic components for the hyperdrive of our X-Wing model. Furthermore, we will receive die-cast frame parts, which we will assemble in a later phase. I find the modelling and painting of the components very successful. But this construction phase has been so short, which is very sad.

The 81st edition of the “Build your X-Wing” collection from DeAgostini includes the components for the power nozzles and the frame. The accompanying magazine, shows an instruction manual for construction phase 81 and focuses on the pilots of the B-Wings and Gina Moonsong. With the components of this issue we extend the
hyperdrive and mount the frame surrounding it.

Components and construction phase

With the components delivered this time, we expand the hyperdrive mount of our X-Wing model. The other components supplied are part of the frame that surrounds the opening of the area where the drive is mounted. I find the modeling and painting of the components very successful. Even if this construction phase is again very short, I am already looking forward to the further components and construction phases.

The 82nd edition of the “Build your X-Wing” collection from DeAgostini includes the components for frame and hyperdrive. The accompanying magazine, shows a tutorial on Building Phase 82 and focuses on the design development of the B-Wings and Poe Dameron. Hyperdrive of the X-Wing with various thin tubes.

Components and construction phase

The various tubes included in this issue are mounted on the hyperdrive of our X-Wing model. In addition, we receive further parts for the framework, which we will install at a later stage. The modelling and painting of these parts is very good. You need again a very good feeling for this construction phase, because of the very filigree components.

Issue 83:

In the 83rd edition of the “Build your X-Wing” collection from DeAgostini are the parts for frame and hyperdrive. The accompanying magazine, shows a guide to Building Phase 83 and focuses on B-Wing miniature models and toys and Luke Skywalker. In my opinion I didn’t like the arrangement of the chapters. I also didn’t find the preparation of the two topics very interesting.

Ausgabe #83

Components and construction phase

Among the components delivered this time are metal parts with which we complete the rear fuselage frame. Furthermore we get several details for the hyperdrive of our X-Wings model which we will assemble in the next phase. I find the modelling and painting of the components quite ok. Fortunately the construction phase is a bit longer and stabilizes the model.

Issue 84:

The 84th edition of the “Build your X-Wing” collection by DeAgostini contains the components for the torpedo bay. The accompanying magazine, shows an instruction manual for construction phase 84 and focuses on the Imperial Shuttle and Fenn Rau. For the first time, the space shuttle is briefly in “The Empire Strikes Back”
to see. In the sequel, she serves as the personal ship of the Emperor.

the cockpit to the fuselage frame.

Components and construction phase

Among the components delivered this time are four plates for the housing of the torpedo bay as well as components for the cylindrical torpedo sequencer. In this phase we join the two halves of the fuselage and assemble the cockpit. I think the modeling and painting of the components is fantastic. This construction phase was a lot of fun and finally the scale of the model is revealed.

In the 85th edition of the “Build your X-Wing” collection by DeAgostini the cover for the hyperdrive is included. The accompanying magazine, shows a tutorial on Building Phase 85 and focuses on the Imperial Shuttle and Temmin “Snap” Wexley. I found the chapter “Creating a Starship Fleet” with the topic “The Imperial Shuttle” particularly exciting and informative.

cover of the hyperdrive and various details.

Components and construction phase

Among the components delivered this time is the long narrow cover for the hyperdrive. If it is removed, the entire assembly can be inspected more closely. The other parts included are details of the top of the rear fuselage. Once again I find the modeling and painting very successful.

In the 86th edition of the “Build your X-Wing” collection by DeAgostini the components for the hyperdrive are included. The accompanying magazine, shows an instruction manual for the construction phase 86 and deals with the Imperial Shuttle. In my opinion the Imperial Shuttle is a very good topic, I find the many set photos particularly interesting.

The chapter is omitted in favour of a larger construction manual with more pages and photos.
Building the X-Wing – Construction phase 86
The components of this edition include further details for the cover, which we are mounting on our model at this stage.

Components and construction phase

We mount the details delivered this time on the cover of the hyperdrive. We’re attaching the details to the cover. We don’t need glue to mount them with connectors. I think the modelling and painting of the components is very successful. Finally a bigger construction phase again.

The 87th edition of the “Build your X-Wing” collection by DeAgostini includes the components for the hull and the torpedo tubes. Flying aces – Kazuda Xiono

Building the X-Wing – Construction phase 87
Among other things, we need the components in this issue for the assembly of the hull area in front of the torpedo room.

Components and construction phase

We need the enclosed components to assemble the hull area in front of the torpedo room as well as the torpedo tubes and the channels through which the torpedoes move. We also attach the nose to our X-Wing model. Again a very nice construction phase with interesting components.

The 88th edition of the “Build your X-Wing” collection by DeAgostini includes the components for the outer shell and battery box. The accompanying magazine, shows a guide to Building Phase 88 and focuses on the Imperial Shuttle and Finn. Components and construction phase

The components supplied this time include the battery box cover and two parts of the fuselage cover. Also included are the pilot’s joystick and the mount for the targeting computer screen, which is mounted in front of the pilot. I find the modelling and painting of the components very good. This construction phase is again short.

The 89th edition of the “Build your X-Wing” collection by DeAgostini includes the components for the cargo compartment and cockpit. The accompanying magazine, shows an instruction manual for the construction phase 89 and deals with the imperial shuttle and Chewbacca. In my opinion once again a very nice compilation of the topics.

Among the components in this issue are hoses for the life-support unit.

Components and construction phase

The enclosed parts include two components of the outer fuselage cover – they enclose both sides of the cargo compartment – and six flexible hoses for the life support system behind the pilot seat. The modeling and painting of the components are very successful and the construction phase is very tricky.
